Since starting the mentoring programme, I found my hidden skills and used them in all aspects of my life. My presentation skills became noticeable at the University, before I would dread presentations and get myself in a state, I could not wait to finish them either. Now I tend to nominate myself to go first and relish the fact that people are listening to me.

Participating on the EMUS Programme was the best thing I have ever done. I was matched with a mentor from HM Revenue and Customs. During the 6 months on the programme my knowledge, work skills and confidence grew and now I am clear about the direction I want to take and how to achieve this. One of my main goals which I set on the scheme was to gain work experience in the Mental Health Sector. I am pleased to say, I was given an excellent opportunity for voluntary work in that field, which after extensive training which expected to lead to a full-time job. I could not have found this great opportunity if I did not participate on the EMUS Programme.

As a mentee on the EMUS Programme, I was able to gain a summer placement with Atkins Global, and at the end of my studies I will become a full time member of staff. Thanks to Flavia at the NMC and Mr Howard Shiplee at the Olympic Delivery Authority.

My mentor made me aware of many things I knew, but was not right. Being on the programme, help me to focus on what I really want to do after my study. My confidence and communication skills have improved immensely.

The mentee program was excellent. The program gave me insight into how multinational companies like Shell where I was mentored are run. It also helped me to understand what employers are looking for in employees. It is such invaluable program.

What I liked: the commitment from my mentor, the drive to inspire us, the mentoring leading to gaining knowledge and advice to become better equipped for our industry What I gained: insight into office life, interview skills and practice, advice from office workers, CV skills, motivation and confidence. Impact: Better prepared when approaching employers, better prepared for office life, widen my thought on my career, prepared me on how to tackle set backs in my career, made me motivated stronger and taught me how to be professional. I perfected my CV and application skills which made job hunting exciting; I was finally getting through to interview/assessment stages of recruitment. The practice interviews and experiencing being in an office during working hours gave me the best insight and preparation ahead of my work placement. I successfully gained the opportunity to work with the ODA for 1 year and I was ready and motivated to succeed thanks to the guidance and advice I received from the scheme. Right from the start I was professional, able to handle pressure and approach difficult situations and this was thanks to the opportunities my mentor gave me of being in the office with him, speaking to his colleagues and seeing first hand how everything worked. We spent a lot of time analysing situations and discussing how to approach them. This gave me confidence to approach my placement with success.

The Mentoring scheme undertaken during my last year at UEL has been without a doubt the single most efficient catalyst in ensuring my employability as a student was not limited to simple theory learned inside lecture halls and seminar classes. The confidence, responsibility and of course sense of achievement obtained in taking part from the EMUS programme and the incredibly proficient & professional Flavia and her team, have only assisted me in cementing my foot in the door in the city career I was looking to realize. All in all: I am proud but mostly glad to have had the honor to have taken part and hope it sustains the full support of the University. Due to my participation on the scheme I was able to obtain a full time Managerial position with Euromoney Institutional Investor PLC.

This mentoring scheme has been a learning curve for me, especially learning from my mentor who has been great throughout and who has always been professional in her approach. She arranged for me to spend an entire day in her office at HM Revenue & Customs in Stratford, which was a unique experience, as I have never worked in an office before. I built a good relationship with my mentor considering we came from two totally different backgrounds. The scheme also made me realised how much society needs role models, and so therefore, I combined my degree with Education.

I am truly grateful for the opportunity and support from the NMC and my mentor. My mentor has allowed me to look at my life from a more holistic perspective, and the thorough guide and aspects of the workplace. I experience and I hope to make my mentor and the NMC very proud once I have accomplished my intended goals. With the help of my mentor, I was able to develop the skills I already have and with his help I received four job offers, and highly considering taking up one of the posts. Thanks again to the NMC for that opportunity. Anamic Oppong Poku My mentor and I done lots of activities, but the one I really enjoyed was when I participated in a team exercise, I was able to learn new skills and approach about how to deal with difficult situation at my workplace. Now I am a good leader as well as enjoying what I do. I sent my CV to different organizations and they all have been accepted and invite me for interview.

Thanks to the NMC and especially Flavia for the opportunity to come on this programme as a mature student and be mentored by someone at Natwest. I was given the opportunity to walk into Natwest Bank Head Office and was allowed to be involved in the day to day running of Natwest Bank. I was able to suggest few ideas for the bank; I even got involved with the new launch of good practice. At UEL, I always felt that doing a PDP was not relevant to every day working life, but actually it’s very important and is used very heavily within Natwest. Even in such environment (Natwest Bank Head Office), my opinion mattered.

my first meeting with my mentor I had to apologize profusely, because I am a natural stammer. I took time to share with her my life experiences. She listened and after all, she told me “Your stammering cannot and will not hinder your progress in the working world. No one has ever said that to me before, and that meant so much to me. My mentor has helped me bridge that scary gap between University and the professional world.

The work of the NMC is a light at the end of the tunnel. Because of the programme and the organizations that join the NMC, I was matched with a mentor from HM Treasury. Within the first 2 months on the scheme I obtain a placement at TV Edwards Solicitors at Mile End. It would not have been done otherwise. What really surprised me was when he asked to see my feedback after the end of semester exams and after reading my feedback, he book a day to go through what the lecturers wrote on the paper and advised me on how best to improve on my marks.
